Absence of Home

To understand me as a multidisciplinary maker, It is important to understand my perception when it comes to uprooted roots like mine in Surinam.

These pictures were taken on my first trip to Surinam in 2023. As my connection to my Surinamese lineages was quite absent throughout my childhood it was a confronting venture into the unknown. As soon as I crossed the Marowijne river I felt a deep sense of grief. When I travelled into the Amazone the nature around me redefined the meaning of home and the feeling of grief made space for acceptance.  As I am still practising acceptance, I also realise that the sense of uprooting has planted its seeds long before my ancestors reached Surinam. This series is dedicated to feeling the absence of home while redefining it.
